David Foster Wallace- Big Red Son & Authority and American Usage

Part I

1.” But far away the CES’s most popular venue, with total attendance well over 100,000 every year, is what is called the Adult Software exhibition, despite the fact the CES itself treats the Adult tradeshow kind of like the crazy relative in the family and keeps it way out in what used to be the parking garage of the sands hotel.”

Yes:” Software” Is a funny misnomer here. It’s going to be a constant temptation to keep winking and nudging and saying ” no pun intended” or ” as it were” after every possible off-color entendre, of which there are so many at the AAVNAS that yr. corresps. have decided to try to leave most of them to the reader’s discretion as matter of personal choice and taste.

2.”And 20-year veteran Joey Silvera is at this year’s CES, though mostly in his capacity as an auteur: Silvera now directs Evil Angel’s popular “Butt Row” video series.

Silvera, who broke in way back in the ’70s at Times Square’s old show world, looks like a curly-haired and extremely fit praying mantis; he’s even weirder-looking now that his curls are mostly gray. He’s also famous for always showing up on the set with small duffel bag filled with exotic vitamins and herbal and other supplements, all self-prescribed.

3.”Then one of the starlets decides that she’s hungry, and Max insists on escorting her down to the Sahara’s restaurant and wants everybody else to come along, which eventually results in the B-girls and crewmen and yr. corresps.

Hecuba and Filth, being both familiar with Max and financially independent of him, elect to remain in the suite under the beady and seemingly lidless eye of the production Asst. ( who, by the way, is not wearing a fire-colored MAXWORLD jumpsuit but has evidently been promised one if he completes his probationary employment period in good standing)

4.”But the really salient and ingenious features of A Dictionary of Modern American Usage involve issues or rhetoric and ideology and style, and it is impossible to describe why these issues are important and why Garner’s management of them borders on genius without talking about the historical context in which ADMAU appears, and this context turns out to be a veritable hurricane of controversies…”

Sorry about this phrase; i hate this phrase, too. This happens to be one of those very rare times when “historical context” is the phrase to use and there is no equivalent phrase that isn’t even worse (I actually tried ” lexico-temporal backdrop” in one of the middle drafts, which i think you’ll agree is not preferable)

5.”So hard to maintain on certain issues that its almost irresistibly tempting to fall in with some established dogmatic camp and to follow that camp’s line on the issue and to let your position harden within the camp and become inflexible and to believe that the other camps are either evil or insane and to spend all your time and energy trying to shout over them.”

It seems to be a natural law that camps form only in opposition to other camps and that there are always at least two w/r/t any difficult issue

6.” I realized early- at the age of 15 that my primary intellectual intrest was the use of the English language”

“(Garner prescribes spelling out only numbers under ten. I was taught that this rule applies just to Business Writing and that in all other modes you spell out one though nineteen and start using cardinals at 20. De gustibus non est disputandum.)

Tangential. It goes off into an entirely different direction. Tries to make it funny because this is about porn and the name of it has software in it.

This footnote is providing more information. It is letting the readers know a little more about the person that was staring in the movie.

This footnote is tangential. This goes into another direction and starts off by talking about going get someting to eat and ends up talking about a person that is not wearing a certain type of outfit thats been promised to him.

Tangential. This footnote  is used to apologize for using that phrase.

This goes to explain more. He explains why he used camps to describe the types of issues that he wanted to explain.

Tangential because it’s explaining where he got the rule to spell out certain numbers from why he decided to spell out certain numbers and on others just use the number

The main purpose of a footnote is to acknowledge the source of any direct or indirect quotation of any idea, opinion, or factual material, which you have taken (not necessarily in quotation) from another author or authority. Footnotes can also be used to expand, or supplement, statement made in the body of your essay with information, which is peripheral to your main argument but still considered relevant.

Part II

1. I would describe David Foster Wallace point of view in “Big Red Son” is that he’s an outsider explaining what he sees and hears about the porn industry. He was not being sarcastic about the situation he was being in. He seemed that he was very interested about being to the event. He was not trying to judge anyone he was just amazed by the information he was finding out. I don’t think his role as reporter affected his point of view. He didn’t hold anything back of try to make it seem like it was nasty.

2. My perception about the porn industry after reading “Big Red Son” is very good now. This showed that the people who participated in these videos are not nasty. They are not just doing this just for their own entertainment. This is their job and they are just trying to make their money like the next person. The impression that David Foster Wallace wants us to have on the porn industry is to stop viewing it as something that is just disgusting and nasty. This is really something that is though about over time and not thrown together last minute.

3. The title “Authority and American Usage” means the right and wrong way to write and the way that us American people use words. I do believe that there is both a right and wrong way to use words. Almost every year our language changes as well as usage. In more professional situations we are going to use the right grammar and complete sentences. If we are hanging out with family and friends we often use “slangs” and just try to make the sentences short as possible.

4. This is saying that if there was a book written on American usage the people that should buy the book will not get it. This is something that people do not worry about, but the people that would go get is called a SNOOT. A SNOOT is someone that would be called a nerd and they are definitley the ones that need to stay away from these kinds of books. (Wallace, 69)

When we are talking there are two things that get our point across. Its the verbal information that is being conveyed and the communicator. The way that the sentence is heard thist is thhow we will be remembered by. There is plenty of ways to say one basic thing. It all depends on the situation and mood that a person is in and that is determined on the way your sentence will come across. “Could we finish this up later?” or “Get out” Choose the right one to handle the situation correctly. (Wallace, 96-97)

Part III

The challenging of borders and limits, including those of decency

The exploration of the marginalized aspects of life and marginalized elements of society. (The ‘problem’ with grand narratives is that they bring all of experience under one explanatory and one implicitly or explicitly regulative order, and hence are potentially totalitarian and repressive; the problem of trying to live without them is that without their explanatory frame there is no way in which acts can be validated other than through the validation of pleasure or pain, some would say beauty or ugliness.)

Maxine Hong Kingston-No Name Women & Amy Tan- Half and Half

” But how would this tiny child without family find her grave when there would be no marker for her anywhere, neither in the earth nor the family hall?”

How would the little baby know who she was. No one would treat her well because she would be known as the child that comes from a lady that cheated on her husband while he was away working. She was made by a women who commited adultry. The people in the community would not put the baby in a proper place if she would have needed to be buried and they would not tell her or let her know who she really was because they would not give her the family name. Even though she had nothing to do with what her parents did she would be the embarrasment. So the mother of the child felt that the right thing to do was to drown the baby down the well along with herself.

“How the hell did we ever get married? Did you just say ” I do” because the minister said ” repeat after me”? What would you have done with your life if I had never married you? Did it ever occur to you?”

After awhile just going along with what the other person says can not always end in a good was. Also saying ” i don’t care” or “either way is fine with me” Can only tell the other person that what they are asking may not be important so just hurry up and make a decision. He was upset and felt that his wife could not make up her mind because of the mistakes that he made with the patients face. He felt like it was all her fault because he needed to blame it on someone. He asked her what she would do with her life had he not married her. That was a sign there to show that the marriage was over. No getting the answer that he was looking for from his wife has brought it to the point where he now wants to divorce his wife. The main point that was trying to be said is talk to your partner.

Rudolph Fisher, Claude McKay, & Countee Cullen

During the early 1900’s, the burgeoning African American middle class began pushing a new political agenda that advocated racial equality. The epicenter of this movement was in New York, where three of the largest civil Rights groups established their headquarters. W.E.B DuBois was at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement at this time. DuBois along with a group of African American political activists and White Civil Rights workers met in New York and talked about challenges racing the black community. In 1909, the group founded NAACP to promote civil rights and to fight African American disenfranchisement. Marcus Garvey promoted the book “Back to Africa Movement”. He also founded UNIA and ACL reuniting all people of African ancestry into one community and with one absolute government. The National Urban League founded by Ruth Standish Baldwin and Dr. George Edmond Haynes, Which counseled black migrants from the south, trained black social workers, and worked to give education and employment opportunities to blacks. African American Civil Rights activist’s employed the artist and writers of their culture to work for goal of civil rights and equality. The blossoming of African-American culture in European-American society particularly in the worlds of art and music, became known as the Harlem Renaissance.

In 1896, racial equality was delived when Plessy V. Ferguson Supreme Court case declared racial segeration to be constitutionally acceptable. The south became gradually more and more economically depressed as bull weevils began to infest cotton crops and this reduced the amount of labor needed. In the south blacks began to head to Northern United States by millions. The north granted all adult men the rights to vote, provided better educational advancement for African- Americans and their children, and offered greater job opportunities. This phenomenon, known as Great Migration, brought more than seven million African-Americans to the north.

Disillusionment of Ten O’ Clock-Wallace Stevens/ The Red Wheelbarrow-William Williams

The characteristics that Disillusionment of Ten O’ Clock has to show that it is and modern poem is unconventional use of a metaphor. An example from the story is ” The houses are haunted By white night-gowns. None are green, Or purple with green rings, Or green with yellow rings, None of them are strange, with socks of lace And beaded ceintures.” Another is juxtaposition the example is ” To dream of baboons and periwinkles.” This poem also uses free verse because they have no rhyming scheme.

The Poem The Red Wheelbarrow uses fragmentation, an example of this characteristic is ” glazed with rain water”. The poem also use free verse ” so much depends upon a red wheel barrow glazed with rain water beside the white chickens” it would be the whole poem because it does not have any type of rhythm throughout the poem.

Both authors have many similarities as well as differences they are both very good at using many descriptive words to get their point across. They both decided not to use any type of rhyming words for all poems. Although they both use descriptive words William’s poem is short but it still gets to the meaning .

Kate Chopin-The Storm Neg Creol

The theme for the story “The storm” is cheating. Bobinot and his son Bibi was at a store waiting for a storm to pass the mans wife was at home waiting for her husband and son to get back and while she was waiting a gentleman named Alcee asked if he could stay in the house until the storm passed they ended up having sex when her husband and son  made it home they all sit to the table and have supper as if nothing has happened. The subject of the story is adultery. Calixta didn’t learn anything from sleeping with a man that was not her husband. With the way that her husband was sitting and thinking about her while she would be to the house alone during the storm it would seem like in the next scene she would be having an affair with another man. ” Do you remember in assumption Calixta? he asked in a broken voice broken with passion. oh! She remembered: for in assumption he had kissed her and kissed and kissed her…”

The theme for the story “Neg Creol is dealing with different cultures. Neg is a black man that worked around a lot of creole people and he carried an old sack with him where he kept his earnings from working in a market he would walk to the house of mademoiselle de Montallaine and share with her all the things in the bag she always complained about things she became ill and died during the night when the funeral passed by him he kept his head down and continued to do his work. The subject to this story is watch how you treat people. The protagonist changed when by when the lady died he said she was not his kin and the real way that he felt came out. ” Chicot had once been thrashed by a robust young Irish priest for expressing his religion views, and at another time knifed by a sicilian.”

George Washington Cable- Belles Demoiselles Plantation

1. The precise relationship between Colonel and Charlie is that Charlie was a distant relative on the Choctaw side.

2. When he says the colonel is noblesse by this he means more upscale, known for having plenty of money, and well known by many people because of the clothes that they would wear or maybe even the things they would buy. When he says Charlie is low-down he means that he is most likely not to have the finer things. You would not be able to compare Colonel and Charlie on the same level.

2. Colonel was given the Belle Demoiselles and Charlie was given the block of house because the ownership was based strictly on the rights and interest of De Charleu.

3. I believe that the Colonel wants the block of house because the block had once been very poor but it was becoming valuable.

4. Charlie wish not to sell nor trade the house because Charlie was really faithful in in his family pridepreposterous ancestral loyalty and he was going to stick to it.No matter what the offer was charlie was not going to budge.

5. I believe that when it is said that Belle Demoiselles would “break” Charlie in two years this meant that he would be broke in the next two years.

6. Fealty means hist. fidelity to a feudal lord. Charlie shows the Colonel fealty because the two men had a history together. It was not like the two men had just met and they wanted to swap houses.

 7. Colonel feels guilty when Charlie finally agrees to swap properties with him because he knows the truth about the house. They have known each other for plenty of years so he felt their was no need to lie to him and swap houses.

Mark Twain-fenimore’s cooper’s lieracy offence

Part I

1. That a tale shall accomplish something and arrive somewhere. But the Deerslayer tale accomplished nothing and arrives in the air.

3. They require that the personages in a tale shall be alive, except in the case of corpses, and that always the reader shall be able to tell the corpses from the others. But this detail has often been overloaded in the Deerslayer tale.

4. They require that the personage in a tale, both dead and alive, shall exhibit a sufficient excuse for being there. But this detail also has been overlooked in the Deerslayer tale.

9. They require that the personage of a tale shall confine themselves to possibilities and let miracles alone;or; if they venture a miracle, the author must so plausibly set it forth us to make it look possible, and reasonable. But these rules are not respected in the Deerslayer tale.

10. They require that the author shall make the reader feel a deep interest in the personage of his tale and their fate; and that he shall make the reader love the good people in it, is indifferent to the others, and wishes that they would all get drowned together.

1. I feel that their was no meaning in writing the book. Most books people can relate to them because their was a part that they felt was written for them but for this book nothing was felt

3. If the person is alive make it obvious that the person speaking is really present. If the person is dead and maybe its there spirit that is talking prove to the readers that the person is not really alive.

4. Make sure that all characters in a book have a purpose in being there. Do not put a person present if it is obvious that they should not be there.

9. We all know when something is made up so when an author wants to tell a part that’s not reasonable he should still explain it to make it real and seem like it could really happen.

10. Took a different route than the normal way a story usually would go. Liked the bad person rather than the good person and would like it more if something bad would happen to the good characters.

To Mark Twain the qualities of a good story would be to stick to the way that stories are usually written. Make sure theirs a point to the story and make sure  the right characters are in the correct parts and not just thrown in at any given moment. I believe that he wrote the rules because he really disliked Cooper. He wrote the rules to really get Cooper upset because he purposely put that Deerslayer tale did not agree with his rules.

Part II

“Well, one night-it was a friday night- dey comes a whole plattoon f’ma nigger ridgment datwas on guard at the house. With this one he used the use the right word, not its second cousin. The way i see it working is they are not holding anything back. Nigger is a strong word and instead of trying to get out the easy way he keeps it and it really helps the story.

“If you an’t my Henry, what is you doin’ wid dis welt on yo’ wris’ an’dat sk-yar on yo’ forehead? The rule that is being used is not omit necessary details. It works because this is the main thing that she remembered about her son. If these two things were not said about her son there would be no point in bringing back her son to her at the end of the story.

Emily Dickerson- I felt a Funeral, in my Brain

For this poem i feel that she is explaining the sounds that you would hear if attending a funeral. ” Mourners to and fro Kept treading- treading” from that i get that in her mind she was hearing people walking back and forth viewing the body. When she uses the word service that’s the key word that jumps out to me and left me know its really a funeral. ” And then i heard them lift a Box” this would be the pallbearers carrying the casket into the graveyard. ” And then a plank in Reason, broke, And i dropped down, and down” Being lowered into the ground. The conclusion about death that she arrives to is she doesn’t really know happens once a person is lowered into the ground that’s the farthest that anyone can take it because we do not know what to expect after that.

Walt Whitmann- Leaves of Grass

In this piece of writing i believe that when he uses “the grass” Whitman is observing a person. He puts that he is at ease and makes it seems that he is watching another person. He could call his work Leaves of Grass because possibly he could have been writing this poem during the summer. When i first read the poem the first thing that popped into my mind was the grass represented himself as a person because all he talked about was “I”.
